What better to do on a wet weekend than watch a bit of tele. I decided to watch something in Spanish towards my linguist badge.

I fell at the first hurdle, as "The Mess You Left Behind" was dubbed. Second time lucky with "Mariposa de Bario", a biographical series about Jennifer Rivera, a Mexican singer. The first episode sees young Jenni's attempts to escape an abusive marriage end in a suicide attempt.

Thanks to the flashbacks, I have reason to hope the story will become uplifting as the episodes go on.

Linguistically, it's good to hear Spanish being spoken as it helps to "get your ear in". They speak so quickly, though. I've understood a few phrases but, as a newbie (47 days of Duolingo) I am quite dependent on the visuals and subtitles.

I'm going to watch the next episode and am hoping to hear someone order a tomato salad (una ensalada de tomates), claim a suitcase (mi maleta) or announce the day of their birthday party(mi fiesta de cumpleanos)!

Well done - and thank you for reminding me that I need to watch some films / TV series in Spanish for the badge. I’m on day 25 (I think) of Duolingo, and am enjoying the process - it makes me wonder how many young people I tried to teach French and German to would have used the app, had it been available then!
