Looking at the badge, I want to share details of a wonderful project set up to help protect the chimpanzees in Hoima District, Uganda. I hope this will be of interest to anyone wanting to learn more about animals close to extinction.
BCCP, Bulindi Chimpanzee and Community Project, was set up a few years back by my niece Jax and her partner Dr Matt McLennan, a world-leading primatologist.
Matt had been studying the chimps in this area over a number of years and was very concerned at the deforestation and the impact on the troop as their forest became fragmented. The project set out to undertake a massive programme of reforestation (I think it stands at 1 and a half million trees), community support and education.
What these two people have achieved is massive and totally humbling. The project employs chimp monitors and foresters to improve conditions for chimps and has made an incredible difference to the lives of many local people, huge numbers of whom live in poverty. I was fortunate enough to visit in 2019, an experience I will never forget.
I am unapologetically proud!
Please check out the fb page, read some od Matt's articles on these incredible apes and make a donation if you can.
